What We Do

What is a Child Advocacy Center?

A Child Advocacy Center (CAC) is a specialized facility designed to support children who are victims of abuse or neglect. These centers provide a safe, child-friendly environment where children can receive comprehensive services to help them recover from traumatic experiences.

Typically, a CAC brings together a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including social workers, law enforcement officers, medical professionals, therapists, and legal experts, to work collaboratively on child abuse cases. The goal is to minimize the trauma experienced by the child during the investigation and legal process by centralizing services and offering them in one location.

Key functions of a Child Advocacy Center include:

  1. Forensic Interviews: Trained professionals conduct non-leading, age-appropriate interviews with children to gather information about abuse in a way that minimizes retraumatization.
  2. Therapeutic Services: Counseling and emotional support are provided to help the child process and heal from the trauma.
  3. Case Coordination: Professionals from various fields work together to ensure the child’s needs are met, including legal assistance and support throughout the investigative and court processes.
  4. Family Support: The center also offers resources and services for family members to help them navigate the healing process and understand the investigation.

CACs aim to reduce the number of interviews a child must undergo, thus minimizing the emotional and psychological toll that often accompanies the investigation of abuse.
